It is not my aim to sketch here a more specific account of political virtue. It is unlikely, however, that a satisfactory account will be simply a sub-station of a wider moral theory, or that it will be separate from psychological and ethical (in the sense now of character-based) considerations, or that it will license procedural and decisionistic accounts of practical reasoning. There is room for significant debate between political philosophers both at a descriptive level and at a metaethical level as well.
The alternative is a theory which is empty because inapplicable, and inapplicable because not tailored to human agency; it is an apt target for Marx’s stricture on theorists who, losing themselves ever further in abstraction from the world, fancy that they are penetrating ever closer to its core. The characteristic move of the theories of morality and practical reasoning most influential since the Enlightenment is to offer a reductivist analysis. A given moral theory offers its preferred conception of the true or primordial moral concept(s) – usually, a ‘thin’ concept such as that of the good, or the right – and duly issues a set of theory-approved prescriptions for understanding moral agency; the latter may be construed in terms of states of the agent in acting, or states of affairs aimed at by moral action, or some hybrid of the two.
Post-politics and beyond If political philosophy is both to preserve its disciplinary autonomy and to make good the lacunae I have identified, it has to maintain some sense that politics as an activity is special. On investigation, this may prove not to be the case; it may be that there is nothing to be said about politics which is true only of it and of no other field of human endeavour. But if that is not true, there is a point in the philosophical analysis of politics, rather than regarding real-life political activity as the remediable imperfection of a pre-ideal world.
