But now new anxieties assailed her. The upper passage was dimly lit by a pair of guttering candles in a wall sconce. From a closed door on her right came gasps and moans of a most disturbing nature. Before she could even speculate at what might be occurring within, a buxom woman in a too-tight gown of bright pink satin emerged from another door farther along the passage. "What's all the commotion, then? " The woman confronted them, hands on plump hips, her improbably black hair spilling over her bare shoulders to partially conceal her ample cleavage with fat ringlets.

Sally merely shrugged, her ample bosom rippling with the motion. "Some gents like that kind of spirit--mostly the ones what like it rough. " Her courage dissipating as quickly as it had revived, Quinn turned away--only to catch sight of herself in the mirror again. She looked every bit as frightened as she felt. She simply _had_ to escape somehow, before the worst happened. "That's better," said Sally, when Quinn remained silent. "Now, I'll go down and do a bit of advertising. " Quinn shook her head.

He escorted her out of the building before answering. "Someone saw you being forced into the Scarlet Hawk. " Stopping, he gazed down at her, his expression showing some strong emotion held in check. " She nodded, suddenly shy. "I was never more relieved in my life than when you appeared. It was like an answer to prayer--a miracle. I told no one I was coming here, so I thought--" To her horror, she felt tears welling up in her eyes. "Shh! " He folded her against him, and she gratefully pressed her face to his shirtfront, hiding her tears.
