Aaronsohn had a remarkably strong personality as well as being an autodidactic genius. Born in Rumania in 1876, he emigrated to Palestine with his parents at the age of six. Together with several other Rumanian Jews, his family founded Zikhron Ya'akov, one of the first Jewish agricultural settlements in Palestine. While helping his parents turn the stony, barren soil into agriculturally useful land, he developed an interest in the native plants of the surroundings. His scientific curiosity was further aroused when his uncle gave him a microscope, which he taught himself to use.

The Nazis pasted up large signs reading: "I am a dirty Jew, Aryans will not buy from me" on the shop windows. " I could not stop myself from walking up to one of them and saying: "Thank you for collecting money for me. " Before he realized what I said, I disappeared into the crowd. When I got back to the university and told Huber what was happening in the streets, as a devout Catholic, he could not believe it. He said that the "good" Germans in the crowd would never tolerate such excesses. This gave me a revealing insight into how politically naive people like him were, unknowingly, they contributed to Hitler's rise to power.

With difficulty, he said, "Herr Doktor, you have been denounced as a confirmed Jew (bewusster Jude) and I am supposed to dismiss you immediately. " I had expected something like this and answered rather brashly, "Your Magnificence (the official title of a rector), in time to come, you may remember this day as the beginning of the downfall of Germany. " With these words I got up, and walked out banging the door. I immediately sent a cable to the Aaronsohn family telling them to expect me in Palestine in April instead of October.
