M-ld M-ld North Side Minneapolis north and west of the Mississippi is an old residential area which has been sliced up in various ways by commercial strip development.
The impact of the freeway has been to transform that which already existed and to encourage the growth of suburbia in all directions. Unfortunately, those who designed the system showed little concern for historic preservation or for the negative aspects of noise and air pollution. Since 1967 Minneapolis, St. Paul, and the various suburbs have been part of the Metropolitan Council, a regional planning and coordinating agency which was established by the state legislature. The major question facing this planning body is how to control the unplanned expansion of suburbia over the rich farmlands which surround the Twin Cities.
